The Chagrin Falls New Year's Eve Popcorn Ball Drop

Since 2012, the Chagrin Falls New Year's Eve Popcorn Ball Drop has been held at Triangle Park in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Festivities usually begin at 10:30 PM.

Every year, a dedicated group of people gather at an undisclosed location that everyone knows about to prepare the popcorn ball for the upcoming drop. These "Merry Pranksters" are Tom & Sally Florkiewicz, Rob & Kathy Schwind, Dewey Forward, Sue Hogan, George Richards, Jan Jones, Scott Butler, Will Butler, Steve King, Jim Newell, Rachael Raymond, Bill Davis, Mort McClennan, and Jeff Holbury (Drone Ohio). Special thanks to our sponsors of years gone by, including Huntington Bank, Ganley Chevrolet in Aurora, Heinens, and of course, The Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop.

Before being hauled up the flagpole and then dropped at midnight on New Year's Eve, the popcorn ball, named "Jupiter", spends the month of December in from of Chagrin Falls Popcorn. The Popcorn Ball Drop could not happen without a great deal of support from The Village of Chagrin Falls. The Chagrin Falls Fire Department helps us rig the town flagpole with the top pulleys needed to raise and drop the popcorn ball.

After some festivities, music, and launching mini popcorn balls into the crowd, the popcorn ball is lowered so that it touches ground at exactly midnight, or sometime thereabouts.

The Popcorn Ball Drop rigging team was elated after rigging about 800 ft (243 m) of rope. All that needs to be done now is hoist the popcorn ball to the top of the flagpole. Thanks to the Chagrin Falls Street Department who got Triangle Park ready for our rigging team. Jupiter, the popcorn ball used, safely stored, and awaiting the Chagrin Falls New Year's Eve Popcorn Ball Drop. Having celebrated the new year, the stalwart popcorn ball is dismantled and trucked back to an undisclosed storage location that everyone knows about.
